For our Quest project, we are researching on the topic of plastic accumulation in our environment and, more specifically, the Pacific Ocean. This is a problem partly because the ocean is a major contributor to the water we drink in order to survive. The Pacific Ocean is also home to zooplanktons, the most abundant animal type of life both by number and total weight, that helps produces the oxygen we breathe. We selected this problem because we found that it interested everyone in our group; also, we thought of an idea that would allow us to make a difference by doing something so little.
In order to reduce plastic accumulation, one of the more conventional methods is simply by sharing information and making individuals more aware of this increasing problem. By doing this, it could make people reduce their use in plastic materials and make them reconsider purchasing anything involved with it. Additionally, everyone can practice properly disposing of plastics that they come into contact with. A proposal our group planned is that we hope to arrange take a trip to local beaches with others in our community and pick up any waste we see.
After the Quest project is completed, we hope to learn more about how detrimental plastic accumulation is and why it is such a huge matter. We hope to research more on why plastic accumulation might be bad for the wildlife in the ocean and how that affects humans and the quality of air we breathe.
